Here we helped design an extension to a hillside villa for a retired couple who had chose to spend there retirement in Turkey. This project was purely a design driven package involving our physical presence at the start (comprising of two days); remote support during the process, as the couple managed the build with their new found free time(comprising of 6 studio hours), and our return at the end to help for fine tuning the finishing touches (comprising of two days).
Due to it's hillside location this property existed over 4 floors as it cascaded down the mountain, each floor projecting further out as one descended. With the master bedroom located on the ground floor having direct access to the garden and pool. The next floor up harbouring the kitchen, sitting area, dining, W/C and main balcony. The floor up from that housing the remaining 3 bedrooms (one of them with ensuite and balcony) and a family bathroom. Finally the top floor which was closest to the car parking and entrance at the top of the house with a significant lawned area, had a bedroom with ensuite and balcony presently being used as the laundry room and storage.
The clients requirements were to convert the top floor into a self contained 1 bedroom apartment for themselves, serving two important purposes: firstly massively reducing the amount of steps they needed to ascend and descend on this hillside property as they got older, but also offering the opportunity to rent out the rest of the villa in the sort after summer months to supplement their retirement if needs must, giving them peace of mind and long term financial security to live out their lives without financial pressure. For this reason alone this was a very enjoyable process!
Our greatest contribution to this project was the redistribution of space and spacial layout using our vast experience to unlock every mm of space for this couple. Here we took advantage of the large top garden to extend out creating space for a substantial master bedroom and huge master bathroom. Then turning to the existing space we were able to knock down walls and redistribute a relatively small space to offer them a very workable kitchen with breakfast bar, a seating area, small dining area, then finally refurbish and covering the biggest and best balcony in the house with great panoramic sea views. This balcony to the front and garden space to the rear really made this design project deliver in terms of luxury, but where the real skill was was in making the existing space work for them maximising ever inch in the layout. Where the location really helped with this scheme is the Turkish weather and the outdoor lifestyle as the balcony now offers dining seating for 8 people and sofa lounging for 6, and will be used daily for 8 months of the year as the main relaxation area, finally with the new pergoda constructed over it's entirety offering shade from the sun without interrupting the stunning views.
Finally we helped with the procurement of products whether they be our own or local, working with their specific tastes and needs, a process we found most enjoyable for as much as they listened to us on the layout and configuration we listened to them on their individual tastes and needs allowing a fusion of ideas that most importantly satisfied the client.
In the end it was the peace of mind we helped give to a retired couples retirement that was the most enjoyable part of unlocking this project with our design knowledge, and we hope it brings them happiness and low stress for years to come.
